Meet Nosi Dumzele – Cape Town Phakamisa Navigator
In August 2014, I noticed a lump in my right breast and one under my arm. The following day I went to work and told my manager. She advised me to go to the clinic. I went and was referred to Groote Schuur Hospital Breast Clinic.
After doing a biopsy, my results were positive for Stage 2 breast cancer. I completed my treatment regime of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and radiotherapy.
The support and strength that the staff gave me inspired me to give back to the breast cancer community.
I now work for the Breast Health Foundation as it feeds my soul to give others the support I received.
I help raise awareness on the signs and symptoms and educate men and women about breast cancer.
Most of my fieldwork takes place at several clinics and day hospitals in Khayelitsha, referring patients to relevant open access breast units.
My role is to navigate them through treatments, surgeries and survivorship. I ensure they don’t default from their treatment plan, and provide support and counselling to them and their loved ones and support systems.
