As we reflect on the impact of cancer, we are reminded that nearly one in five people develop cancer in their lifetime1, others have been touched by it, either personally or through loved ones. This calls for a shift in perceptions of cancer patients.

The narrative often focuses on fear, loss, and suffering, overshadowing the resilience, strength, and dignity that many patients embody. At Novartis, we believe it’s crucial to relook how we view cancer patients and the importance of empowering and supporting them on their journeys.

The power of hope and empowerment

Cancer patients are not defined solely by their diagnosis; they are humans with unique stories, needs, and perspectives. Hope plays a transformative role in their journey, empowering them to face challenges with courage and optimism.

Studies2 have shown that hope can significantly enhance mental well-being, improve treatment adherence, and foster a more positive outlook on life. By nurturing and celebrating hope, we can help patients maintain a higher quality of life, stay motivated during treatment, and find strength in the face of adversity. Hope not only inspires resilience but also illuminates a path forward, reminding patients that they are more than their diagnosis; they are individuals with a future full of possibilities.

Protecting patient dignity is integral to empowering them. This involves respecting their autonomy, ensuring they have access to comprehensive care, and supporting them in maintaining their quality of life. By fostering a culture that values patient dignity, we can create a healthcare environment that is not only effective but also compassionate and respectful.

The role of collaborations with PAGs

A primary role of patient advocacy groups (PAGs) is contributing to health literacy and empowering patients and their families by providing them with information, resources, and support.

This can include information about cancer prevention, screening and treatment options, as well as emotional and psychological support for patients and their loved ones.

Rachel O’Neale, Country President, Novartis South Africa says, “Patient advocacy groups amplify the voices of those living with cancer, highlighting often overlooked issues and ensuring that healthcare providers and policymakers gain a deeper understanding of patients’ experiences and needs. This insight is crucial for enhancing quality of life and achieving better treatment outcomes.”

Patient advocacy groups, such as CANSA3, Campaigning for Cancer4, Breast Health Foundation5, and Cancer Alliance6, leverage their first-hand experiences to champion cancer prevention, raising awareness about cancer risks, and promoting healthier lifestyle choices. By doing so, they play a crucial role in educating communities and fostering environments that support cancer prevention and early detection.
